that doesnt cause droop eye....bare bottom is easy to clean....you see the poo and gravel vac....pretty much every day...plus weekly water changes......I got gravel.....I do gravel vac water changes every week......just a little less maintinece;)

if the glass bottom is what causes that then get an under water filter. you know those plates you put in the bottom. another nice thing about those is you can take the water down to nothing since it filters all the way to the bottom.

i use cichlid sand black/white mix it helps the ph stay where it needs to stay but not alot just enough to cover the bottom it works good for me

. Take poster paper or any solid color construction type paper. Scotch tape it to tank bottom or use those double sticky poster type tapes.
Ofcourse outside bottom of tank lol and now you have a solid looking bottom.

I have used this method as prefer no substrate so easy to clean and looks great. poster paper is the best. I like solid black but that's just my taste.

More of a personal preference, go with what you like best. The arowana won't care either way.
