Just looking for some info on cutting 1/2" thick plate glass. No local shops will cut it for me and i'm being told that it's too thick to be do it myself in the typical fashion. I've been researching a bit online, but all the tutorials I've found all use glass 1/4" or under. Any idea if I can simply score both sides to try and accomplish a decent cut on glass this thick???

wouldn't if i were you. tried cutting 3/8" glass and it was disasterous even after several test runs. i cut 1/4" all the time with no problem. doesn't mean you can't do it, just one of those things where experience is a big PLUS. i gather the local shops are unwilling to do it due to the possibility of something going wrong even with their level of experience. good luck. keep us posted if you do decide to cut yourself.

I've googled it a few times. Just wanted to hear some first hand experience. One of the shops suggest a metal shop w a high pres water jet cutter, was just asking to see if i could do this affordably. Thanks for your input so far. Anyone else feel free to chime in.

Already been contact w a shop that said yes, but they charge a minimum of almost 200.

why cant you just give them a measurement of the glass you need and give you a quote on it.. instead of them cutting a glass that you have.. just a thought..

Along with that thought, you could easily offer them a trade. Unless you need the other piece, that would probably be your cheapest and easiest route..

I've gotten quotes for much thinner and smaller pieces from these shops before, not cheap so i don't even want to know the quote on two pieces of 1/2" @ 10'x2'. I hadn't considered trading, perhaps a possibility.
