First off, yes, i have one through the glass thickness calculator. now here we go. i have 3/8" (10mm) glass, it comes from a 90gall that i have taken apart and will be using for my plywood tank build. the front pane will be made of three pieces of glass, one 4' piece and two 17" pieces. i am going to cut the other 4' section in half for the sides.the total dimensions of the tank would be 82x32x24 tall. my questions are...

1.if i go a total of 32"on the side (24"of glass and 8" of ply) will my 3/8" glass work?...OR
2.should i leave the total width of the tank at 24" (so a 82x24x24 tall) with this glass?
3.can i leave the corners where the glass meets bare (just a glass joint with silicon) or do they need to be braced?

any advice would help

i am trying to budget this tank as much as possible so i will not be buying new glass i will just be using this existing glass as it is cheaper to do so.

Well,

It come out to 272 gallons. That more than triples the amount of gallons of water. I would say no! I dont think the glass will hold that much pressure. My 240 gal is 1/2" glass all around. I think you will bust 3/8" glass with all the pressure.

Hello; I have always understood that it is the depth of the water that determines the pressure at the bottom of a tank (or dam) and not the amount of water. Using that assumption, glass that will hold water at 24 inches deep in a 90 gallon will hold any amount of water as long as the depth does not exceed 24 inches. You should be able to make the sides and back as long as you want if they are no more than 24 inches.

The answer to this is of interest to me as I hope to try another DIY tank some day. I also imagine that charts exist somewhere showing what type and thickness of glass will hold various depths of water.

never mind i figured it out the water pressure will not change front the pressure in the 90 gal. i will just need the top bracing and i am good.
