Glass knifes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I remember correctly...they should be kept in groups. They will develop a hiearchy. They are pretty peaceful with other fish. Temperature should be around 78-82 degrees. They like soft water. pH should be neutral.

Pretty cool fish, VERY prone to ich first few weeks in a tank, so be warned and prepared to deal with that. Other than that, some will eat anything, others are more difficult to get eating frozen/prepared foods. I had them in an interesting tank which was only about half full, lots of emergent plants with root systems underwater, and lots of driftwood, pH was around 6.4 at all times (I used blackwater extract by tetra) and they did well till I went to florida for a week, all my other fish were fine but the three of them didn't make it. I would very much like to get more, they were one of my favorite knifes. Also, they get bigger than the size they are commonly imported at, I have seen one at about 8-10". Now you're making me want to get some again, dammit.:D Ok now I have to. Next week I'm gonna get 3 or 4 and see how they do with my rays. I'll keep you updated. Sorry to hijack your thread, hope I could be of some help.

I just have the one glass knife at the moment and its about 5 inches long, it was kind of a rescue, the lfs had it in with some semi aggressive fish and it just seemed to be overly stressed out. Kept bouncing off the glass everytime someone walked by and nothing to hid in or behind.
I have it in my 100 gallon, planted community tank (yes I qted it) with several peaceful type fishes (platies, zebra danios, pearl gouramis, albino coryies, 4 pyscotic kobata botias, and a confused dragon (aka violet gobie). I know, waste of a large tank, but the grandkids love it, and thats all that matters. Its eatting blood worms, brine shrimp, and some flake food.
Thank you for warning me to keep an eye out for ick, so far no sign. I don't have any driftwood, but I built several caves in the tank when I set it up. I'll keep my eye out for more, and get it a few buddies, but it may take awhile as this is the first one I've seen in over a year.
thank you again for the advice, and no problem 'hi-jacking' the thread.

P.S. Is it normal for it to hang out with the dragon? They always seem to be sharing the same cave.....

Oh, and for anyone about to jump me for the violet gobie being in fresh water, go to the general brackish forum and look under "thats just not right".
Its grown and inch since the pics were posted and shows no sign of slowing down......

Funny you should mention it, my group always hung out wit the tiretrack eel I had, probably just because it was a choice hiding spot, but I think especially where yours is by himself, his instinct is to go look for a school, or at least another fish to stay with, so maybe that's it. Post some pics if you can, and good luck with it, they really are great and under-appreciated fish.
