Glass lids and Canister filters

okay im kinda confused and I was hoping someone could help me out. my 125 didnt come with lids or a canopy for that mater. I was wondering how you guys run your hoses from the canister filters and have glass lids. the lids would smash the hoses right? sorry if this is really dumb, just at working thinking about my current lids that i built.

Well on my tank the lids stop about 2 inches from the back, then there is a piece of plastic that fills in the gap. I just notched/drilled the plastic piece where needed.

store bought glass lids come with a plastic strip that runs across the back that can be cut to accomodate filters/hoses.
