My 225 has no lids. Going to a glass shop to have 3 pieces made roughly 23 inches wide and long 1/4 inch thickness. Wondering if I should bother getting it tempered or not? If I get it tempered would mean I cant modify it for holes later. Price I was given is 11 per piece annealed and 20 per tempered. Just want a second opinion thanks

It’s a lid, no need to temper the lid because if it does ever get damaged you’re looking at collecting thousands of pieces of glass in your tank, regular plain o’l glass works well Incase Of shatter you only need to worry about a couple of chunks

Well there may be a slight advantage to picking tempered glass here. I would feel much better about 1/4" tempered glass vs non tempered holding weight. That is to say, if you were to place some equipment or other item with significant mass on top of the lid, tempered would support it much better and be less susceptible to break if it shifted or you leaned on it accidentally, etc.

Another option if you want to avoid a glass lid is to use Twin wall Polycarbonate, the same product used in greenhouses. It's just another option.

I have been trying to find a decent alternative to glass tops for a long time now. Over the years i have broken soo many when taking them on and off to do maitnence in the tanks. I have tried everything from plexi(too flimsy and sags over time), acrylic(scratches to heck when you try to clean them), eggcrate(durable and works great but then theres evaporation issues) ect. If you do go the tempered route, keep us posted on how they weather the test of time.

Solid info I plan on just getting 2 pieces tomorrow and just see how it goes in the long run if it isnt much more expensive i might get it thicker.

I dont feel like starting a new thread but if anyone has a link to some blueprints to a 225 metal stand I can send to a metal worker/welder that would be really helpful.

I think jsodwi jsodwi might be a metal worker but I can be dead wrong
