You could go 27" high with 1/2" plate glass at 8' long. The extra cost of tempered is not really worth it unless the tank is going to be subjected to things hitting it.
6ft should work and give some bracing
Like Plecosterone said depends where the tank is going to be i.e. living room w/ little kids = tempered.
I don't worry as much about the glass breaking as to where the shard go
