So I set up my 40 gallon community in early August. Before that I used the tank as a temporary tank for one of my turtles. Today I just noticed it's bowing out in the front and back. The only real way I can tell is how the lid sits on the inner shelf of the rim. The closer to the center, the farther away it gets. Its at about 1/8" right now. For all I know it was always like this. I took about 2 inches of water when I noticed. I had just done a water change 2 days ago so the water line was just above the lower part of the rim (just out of view through the glass).

Are you absolutely sure that its bowing out? If so, that sucks :(

I would have a backup plan ready...sounds like it could burst real soon. I would also put your fish in a large bin/tote for a day and add a heater and bubbler in there while you reseal the tank. Unless you have another tank they can go in.

hello; I do not have a ready answer for you. I have read in other threads discussions on glass tanks bowing and gathered that it does happpen. Perhaps a search?? A 40 gallon is not overly long and length was a big part of the discussion. You do not state if this is a factory or homemade tank. If factory and all the braces are in place, it should be acceptable. If home made, the glass may be thinner than a factory tank. I need to check out my tanks as I have not noticed a bow. Have you checked the glass with a straight edge to confirm an actual bow in the glass??

is 1/8" a big deal?

Oh didn't see the 1/8" part...I would still reseal it otherwise it could get worse. Could be wrong though...

Ya with the side of a ruler I just checked.

It's a factory made tank.

If it's a 40g breeder with no brace (the 3 ft long deeper 40g) then it's 100% normal. Both my girlfriend's do this, and I even made a thread asking about it once. Aqueon is the brand of hers and the company even has a statement somewhere saying that is normal. I notice at first because of the lid placement too.
