hi guys,
ive spent the last week searching through the plywood builds and have pretty much got all the info i need to plan and build my own 7ft L by 3ft h by 2ft w tank.( thanks for all the great build posts)
i just want to double check the thickness of the glass ill need, ive used the thickness calculator in the sticky but am not sure if this covers plywood tanks.
so do you guys think 12mm glass is thick enough?
i have two kids and dont want to take any chances with safety as this will be in my livingroom,
thanks

just a quick one for you pal...iv seen you put that you plan on using isoflex to seal your tank...Zavlar is water based and isoflex is oil based, i think its some kind of ester oil, id just check to see its toxicity befor you waste your money..il have a look round at some roofers yards and see if i can find any water based liquid rubber products

cheers mate, i honstly never thought about that. Bit of googling to do:)
On a seperate note..
ive priced the wood today... £40 for the 2 by 4's( i need 19 metres at around £2 a metre) and £95 for three sheets of 8 by 4 external grade ply.
i also know a guy thats a manager of my local glass factory so im hoping for miracle prices with the glass.
i'll keep you all posted
thanks again Clayton

alright pal iv found something for you to use, its called technoseal...its a latex based damp proof course...Iv been on a few other forums and sounds like people have had some good results with it...its not at any of the big diy sheds but you should be able to get it from a builders yard...i know its in firwoods builders supplies...and its good value for money at 5 litres for roughl £30, hope that helps mate

Thanks a lot Clayton, ur a star mate. im going to get the 2 by 4s tomorrow so ill try and find this stuff when im out and about. hope your plans are coming along well, make sure and post a build thread when you do get started :)

Hello Paul
i have 36" deep windows in my homebuild, some people said 15mm would be ok,but got 19mm which they sold me for the same price out of that big glass place in ballynahinch,on the belfast rd.i,ve made 3 tanks, one ply with framing glassfiber with epoxy resin, one ply with framing glassfiber with polyester resin and one concrete with glassfiber and polyester resin, all worked out fine.sounds like your going to have a nice tank there

brian

cheers Brian, good to hear this has been done locally. Where are u from yourself?
Is there a lot of work to the glass fibre and resin method?
my brother used to work in glass-seal on belfast road so im hoping he can get me a great deal. Oh and feel free to post a few photos of your tanks, would love to see them, cheers:)
