hey all,

i am currently working on /starting up my plywood tank build. it will be 6ft long, 4ft wide, and 20 inches high. i will have bracing down the center of it on the lid.

my question is, if i'm installing a 70inch x 18inch glass viewing window, with no bracing against the glass itself to section it, would i be ok with 10mm thick, or would i need to go 12mm or higher?

the reason i ask is because the local glass place has 10mm +size i need instock, whereas they don't stock the 12mm or thicker.

thanks in advance.

Hi there kida, IMO you will be fine as only having the 18 inch hight, over here in ther UK most 6x2x2 glass tanks are of 10mm glass so as yours is less in hight you should be fine. But as always the thicker the glass the higher SF you have. I am building a 36 high tank and will be using 19mm glass, but the window will only be 30 high so i will have a good SF as most say that 15mm will do.

good luck with the build mate.

With 10mm, you would be a bit below the normal safety factor, but you should be OK.

EDIT: Just read your second post. I'm coming up with just under 12mm with a safety factor of 3.8.

see? just converted the inches to centimeters, plus it won't be full up to the top (20inches), prolly only 18-19 inches.

I guess it's just the difference in our calculations. I don't know what baseline equation he is using, so I couldn't tell you the difference.

i think 10mm will be OK.
