There does not seem to be any thread or info on MFK about various glass thickness for aquariums. I suppose the controlling factors are the longest dimension of the sides and the height of the water in the aquarium.
i am not talking about the aquarium which are totally fixed at the edges i.e. embedded in concrete or similar (windows) - rather aquarium which consists of glass panels held together by adhesive (silicone). No drilling in the aquarium either.
I am researching to confirm the glass thickness that i intend to use for my next aquarium. The intended dimensions are 2400x90x75cm (8'x3'x2.5') with water going up to 60cm or 2' only
When i checked websites such as http://www.fnzas.org.nz/articles/technical/common_sized_aquaria/ or http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/aquariumdiy/l/blcustomtank.htm
it seems that i would be safe with 12mm glass ... theoretically i can go more with width since the largest dimension is 2.4m (8')...in fact i theoretically can go 2.4mx2.4m square glass aquarium.
Am i correct in this understanding? If so, why do the aquarium makers are so reluctant to do my 8'x3'x2.5' ...citing safety factors. I called three: one refused to do it outright (no more than 2' or 60cm width), another one capped the width at 80cm. The third one says can do with no problem.
I would appreciate people with large glass aquariums to provide the dimensions as well as glass thickness (pix are always welcome) ^_^
