Hi

I am looking to buy a tank which is 72" x 36" w X 30" h.

and was wondering would 12mm glass be ok?

also due to the size of my door i can only fit 30" through so if i was to buy the tank it would need to be on its side when going through the door would this be ok as well?

12mm is a little thin for that height. I would recommend 19mm.

As for moving... bringing it in on its side will be fine. I've moved plenty of tanks this way.

should be ok with the right kinda supports or bracing. I've built by 60" X 36" X 30" from 12 mm non-toughened glass. I'd suggest you reduce height though.

There's a member here with an 8'x3'x2' made outta 12mm glass also. best to research some more. I think you outta reduce the height.

most calculators state 15 or 16mm for those dimentions. I wouldn't do 12, the safety factor wouldn't be very good at all. And that my freind isn't the way you want to treat your future self. lol

There are several other options as well but if costs are becomeing tight on glass prices alone, you may want to consider scaling back. After all you'll still news lighting, filtration, substrate, stand, canopy, and etc.

if i reduced the hight of the tank would that help to get down to 12mm glass
yes drop to 24" on height and you can use 12mm glass. most 180's are made out of 12mm glass and have 72"x24" panels

At least 4 companies in UK that produce tanks, all of which have an excellent reputation with UK aquarists, produce 72x24x24 from 10mm glass and I doubt they would be doing so,or would stay in business very long, if the tanks were unsafe and likly to fail.
Anything that is 24"tall is made from 10mm in the UK as standard,up to 30" tall steps up to 12mm unless it goes above 7ft long then it is 15mm, and up to 36" standard sizes would use 15mm.
