So the glass shop I work at has some 1/2" tempered glass that I can get my hands on but all the edges have a flat polish. I was thinking about using some of it for a tank but one of the glaziers said that he was told not to use glass with polished edges for an aqaurium...that the silicone would not adhear to the polished edge as well as just a ground edge. Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks for the help

I haven't heard of that. Do a test on a small area. You can always remove it if need be.

You could go the old-fashioned route and set the glass panes in a metal frame. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the siliconed edges holding (because they are restrained from moving by the frame).

That doesn't make sense, as the silicone will have to adhere to a polished surface no matter what, since it sticks to the face of the pane of glass. Just looked at my tank, and the edges look pretty darn polished to me.

This is what I was thinking. It seems like the face of the glass would be as polished as the edges and if the silicone sticks to the face, why not the polished edge. I supose there is only one way to find out though. I think that I will try and if it doesn't work I'll peel it apart and use a metal frame of some kind. I really like the all glass look so hopefully its not an issue.

If you are worried about the polished edges just take some sandpaper and rough them up a little. However it will work with polished edges. People say not to get the edges polished because it nearly doubles the cost of the glass.
