ok, so my wife gave me the go ahead, and now I'm shopping. I just got a quote from a local glass manufacturer for a 3'x6'x1" thick piece of laminated glass for $300. (I'm in the architecture trade so they're always willing to cut us a deal :naughty: ) Then I got the idea that an old friend manages a big building downtown here (pgh) and they always have old glass doors which are about 3'6"x7' 3/4" but they're tempered. He said they have about 5 of them, and I could get them for free. Problem is they're drilled for the hardware. The holes are about middle of the piece and about 4" in from the edge. Think if I burried the glass in the liner to cover the holes that would work? I'm a little worried about the tempered and the fact that it's 3/4" and 3'x7'. Not sure that is strong enough. The $300 piece is looking like the best deal. Any input?

BTW. It's going to be 8'x4'x4'. Either 1 silver aro or 2 bowfin or a trout setup. Haven't decided yet. If asian aros were legal there'd be no question.

SCORE! I knew if I called enough guys in the industry I'd find some cheap glass. I just got the call back from a guy I used to work with a lot, and has interests in my firm now, and he just happened to have 5 pieces of 39.5" x 110" x 1" thick laminated glass that was supposed to be for a canopy on a bank project that went south. He said I was lucky I called because they've been cleaning out their warehouse and it was going in the trash. It's crated and even has polished edges! He's even going to try to route it on a delivery run they have in my area so even the delivery is FREE! FREEBIES!!

So I only need 1 (although I may be re-designing now!) of these, so is anyone interested in a sheet of 39.5x110x1" laminated glass? :)

I'll submit pics when it arrives.

WOW!!!! I wish I lived in PA. Or a whole lot closer :nilly:

Take lots of pictures when you start building. :D

Thanks guys. I plan on keeping a photo journal of the project. Best part is my wife is actually very excited! We went to the Pittsburgh (PPG) aquarium yesterday and scoped out the custom builds. She wants to build a triangular shaped tank built into the corner with the viewing window on the one side. Sort of like below. Thing is, that will have to be concrete, and I'm not convinced I wanna do concrete yet. I know it would be the best, but it's the whole "what if we sell the house" debate. Then again, I could just do a rectangle plywood deal. Best I can figure the below would be about 1300 gallons...

It would be more organic than this of course. Look more like rocks with a waterfall. We'll see what the final design becomes...

I live in Youngstown Ohio and I would be interested in the glass. How much would you want for one. Thanks

Sweet.

I wish I could get there to get it & jave a place to build to use it... now in the cards right now...

You should take the doors too... how many holes drilled? & how many?? over flows perhaps??

That looks like it will be great! I look forward to seeing the progress. If the glass doors were used a lot, there's a chance that they've been compromised a bit so i'd be a lil skeptical using them. Nice drawing too. What architectural field are you in?
