Well I think im about to lose my very first bichir...
I was feeding my fish cut shrimp and accidentaly dropped in a very large piece, it immediately sank and I thought my larger ctenopoma would eat it... That wasnt the case my baby 6 inch senegal bichir thought it looked tasty and tried to eat the whole thing. he somehow managed to fit it in his mouth but couldnt swallow it or spit it back up. I thought he could do one or the other and left him. 10 minutes later and hes I go back to check and hes really struggling to swim so I break out the tweezers and start pulling tiny pieces of shrimp out 1 at a time it took me another 5 minutes to pull out all the pieces... Im figuring about 15 mins. Of him without oxygen (hopefully this wont cause him to be brain damaged) because he couldnt breath in air and the shrimp was blocking his gills. After it was out the fisherman in me took over because at this time there was no movement and he was going belly up and sinking to the bottom so I started rushing his gills in the water, and got abit of movement after 10 minutes of that. After 20 more minutes of that he started moving about under his own power, but he cant seem to stay upright. Im really pissed cause its my fault... Im hoping he recovers but im starting to doubt it it looks like he will be gone in the morning, hopefully not but...
Anyways lesson learned never feed pieces of food bigger than what everybody in the tank can eat
