Is it easy to go from fresh to salt water ?
I have a 6x2x2 with a 4 foot sump that has a trickle tower and al***rog medium. Can i just add a protein skimmer and change over to salt water ?

what was that supposed to be?

sounds like you have a good size tank and an understanding about protein skimmers.. minimally at least..

you shouldn't have too much trouble making the change

adding the salt.. some live rock, letting the tank cycle...
meanwhile researching species to keep etc would be the right track to take at this point

alot of research
join a bunch on Saltwater forums read as much as you can.

not sure what the *** is, but you might want to think about reworking the sump also as saltwater sumps are setup much different than freshwater ones.
you might want to cut the trickle tower and maybe make the space into a fuge.

seems like you have a good start with the gear, just read, read, read and you'll be well on your way.

+1000!! I thought the same thing! I.e, converting from freshwater to saltwater is a piece of cake! but oh boy I was wrong!!

Sorry guys it was suppose to say Al***rog. it is a type of pourous rock very good for filter medium. currently keep two stingrays hence the trickle tower and large sump but i fancy a change. nothing fancy just fish, no corals.

alas.srog? i think it's getting censored out...

if it's porous and non toxic it should work, whatever it may be, lol

a good skimmer should be about all you need for a successful tank...

a 180 is a good size for a FO/FOWLR, alot of different fish you could get, was there anything in particular you'd be interested in?

if it was MY 180 FOWLR, i'd do something like this

3- squamapinnis anthias (1M-2F)
1- sohal tang
1- quinquevittaum wrasse
1- koran angel
1- snowflake eel
2- schooling bannerfish
and may a giant jawfish if i could find one for sale :D

but that's just me

The setup may not need to much tweaking.
Depending on how your trickle setup is, you can usually just replace whatever rock you use in there for bio media and change it over to live rock.
I'll tell you that it isn't much more difficult changing everything over. SW isn't rocket science anymore. The additional labor going into a SW tank, especially if it is just a FO system is quite minimal. No need for a skimmer. Not too much of a need of changing anything else, the only thing I would say would be get yourself some new substrate and some live rock and let the system cycle itself. In no time, you can put fish in.

Hi Guys thanks for the replys. Yes i think my pouros rock spelling is getting censered out ?! God knows why !!
I seem to be getting mixed messages about the use of a skimmer. I only want fish no corals as i don't think i am ready for that. So would i need a skimmer. Would definitely get live rock. My trickle filter has bio balls in. Would i need to change this to rock ?
As for stock i would love the snowflake eel. The only other fish i really like are the puffers and lion fish.

IMO for the skimmer, i would never have a tank without one as they remove wastes before any bio media can break it down and turn it to nitrate, just me though.
Also as has been said, SW water i find is easy if everything is kept natural and simple! Don't use bio balls.
