ok after the first of the year i will be getting a 240 gallon tank. i want to start getting the filtration setup now so im not scrambling last minute.
i found a mag 24 for 120 it should get me 1700 gph at 6 ft do you think thats a good turn over rate? also what is the most efficient filtration. i def want a sump but should i do a diy drawer filter like i have seen some do or just a typical drip tray? also am wondering if i should drill it or just use over flow boxes. if i do drill it how should i drill it if i dont want to install a box inside the tank?
i know lots of questions :nilly: just looking for opinions so dont hisitate to say whats on your mind

See if you can get it drilled before you buy it? that way if they break it your not out of any money?

IMO, Hang on back overflow...and then in your sump you have a internal overflow that only fills up so much that way if your tank stops supplying your sump...your sump pump will just run dry insted of pumping water into your display tank and spilling water everywhere.

100$ for your dead pump.

vs

1000$ for your dead floor, and everything else around your tank if it over flows.

oh dont worry i will have it safety rigged. syphon breaks and seperate chamber for pump. im thinkin of doin 2 over flows supplyiing to each end of a 55 or 75 gallon tank and the pump in a center chamber to pump back up to the center of the tank.

youre sounding good, just remember to add a check valve on the pump return so it cant back feed into your sump :nilly: but other than that, id either get it drilled, or get an overflow box with it.

1700gph should be fine. Generally want between 5 and 10x turnover, and you're just over 7 so that's good.

Like Andy said, if you're going to drill it, I'd try to get it pre-drilled. If you have to do it yourself, make 100% sure it's not tempered glass before you try and drill it. :) HOB Overflow boxes can work, just make sure they have enough flow to keep up with the pump. Can also get float switches for the pump so if the water ever does run out for some reason the pump will shut off instead of run dry and burn out.

Sump setup is pretty much a personal preference these days. I'd prefer a drip tray, but the Sterilite drawer filters seem to work fine as well.

im gettin the tank used so i cant get it drilled first but i know the lfs i work with alot does drilling and i trust them to do it. it would be cheaper to get it drilled than it would to buy the boxes but the boxes are easier and usually quieter. so idk what im goin to do yet. im thinkin about useing a plastic tub for a sump also. what do you think about that?
my fiance says she would rather me just buy the sump and all the pre made stuff but i think of it as kind of a waste of money, money that i can be spending on fish to stock this tank ya know? but yall are the experts so what do you think?

on the 220 i just did i just filled a 50gal with a small 4 drawer set up full of pads and pond matrix with some ceramic rings at the very bottom. only thing is making sure you drilled enough holes for it to go through or itll overflow the top of the drawers.
the over flow and tower cost me a total of about 80 bucks. and it works pretty well although just slightly louder than i would like.

edit also would probably want one of the dual over flow boxes. i have one capped on mine and if anything stops flow more than 30 seconds my pump will drain the sump water.. fast. and its only the mag 950

yea i def need to tweek it a little. but im thinkin using a 100 qt plastic tub as the sump so its cheaper and easier to work with. im looking at a 3 draw unit that is about 14 x 14 draw size so its got good surface area and the draws are short so the noise should stay down
