I was thinking about going to catch a few local fish, would melafix be good for quarantine? Would that take care of any parasites / diseases that could be a problem?

I don't think that would knock out most of the stuff they will have. Remember that there are pathogens in any tank, it is a matter of keeping the fish stress free so their own immune system will keep all these pathogens in check. Most wild caught fish will have internal parasites so a mild bactericide like Melafix won't kill those (but Melafix will help heal wounds and obviously will help with some bacteria they may have).

I always just keep my tanks clean, feed well, and let the fish keep pathogens in check for themselves.

If going the medicated route in a quarantine tank what would the options be? Id like to know as well as I plan on setting up a game fish tank when I get to NC.

Garlic will kill parasites, so that is always an option. I have not found that the liquid garlic supplements work for this purpose (great for getting fish to eat though). Fresh garlic or NLS Thera+A are the things I have seen do this.

Metro+ would be good, but any medication will help kill whatever it kills if the fish have it. Quick Cure for externals, maybe some Pimafix for fungus, and something for internal parasites would be what I would focus on.

THAT! I use Parasite Clear for all my new tank buddies!

another vote for Jungle Parasite Clear . . . that plus two weeks of QT ought to do the trick . . .

Well I have a forty gallon just sitting here that I was thinking about setting up as a local tank. If I only kept local fish in it I wouldn't have to worry about diseases spreading to my other fish.
