They have always interested me and so taking the final steps.

The plan is to try and get a true pair out of a small group. I am currently setting up the tank. I have a good sized twisty piece of wood, 2 large lave rocks, 3 slate like pieces and two extremely large pebble shaped rocks. As to foliage I have a bunch of silk plants though the way the tank looks currently have ordered more plastic plants to pad out more and will be considering some sort of floating plant such as water lettuce.

I have the bits and pieces so hope to aquascape soon. Except for ensuring limiting water changes but keeping good eye on parameters, moving the excess channas once a hopeful pair has formed and feeding a good diet (keeping temps low depending on which sub tropical) are there other things to consider?

One thing I do wish to ask for channas what do you feed yours to give a good varied diet?

And if anyone has their channa setups to share I would love to see some, that would be great x

Yup, you need to consider what sized channa you want to get.

Food wise, I always do my best to get all my Channa onto pellets as their main diet. It is more cost effective and ensures they are getting all they need.

I mix in Krill, worms, and chunks of raw fish with occasional feedings.

Plenty of foiliage (real, plastic, or silk, it doesn't really matter)
Top floating duckweed is great for Channa tanks. Also keep the watewr level a little lower than normal, and have a strong top cover that is sealed well!

If you plan on breeding, make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot, make certain you have places for the fry to go to as they start to grow up!

Good luck!

Hello
When you say pellets are these a generic carnivorous pellet? Any brand names for me to seek out?
The channas I am going for (forgive spelling) are the ortinipinnis. Someone local has them and are moving.
The tank itself I do not have the dimensions for, but believe it to be a 120 litre. It is well sealed already, just need to convert where leads and pipes come out. I have an internal currently for filtration though plan to move to external before introduction of the fish.
When the delivery of the plants arrive will have plenty, will also invest in water lettuce or duck weed. As regards to fry if it happens it happens, we have a couple of small tanks for growout, and know a couple of LFS who know the peeps in there well so will contact them if it happens (though generally I am not that lucky with breeding in any fish but guppies ;))
Thanks for the advice on feeding, I have plenty of meaty foods due to the puffer tanks. Also vitamins to soak food as well. With channas is it similar to puffers, to allow a day of rest? How often should you feed channas?
Hope I have most the basics covered, I still have research ahead of me.

For pellets I always go for Hikari Massivore or Carnivore.

Ornatipinis are gorgeous snakeheads!
Just make sure not to get any off a user called "Nelly" or similar.
His Ornates are mutations, and have been known to grow to around 2 metres long!

... Just kidding, I assume you are getting from Nelly!
His Ornates are great, and if I were to buy Ornates myself, he is the only guy I would trust.

Lmao, gasmask i was just about to run you down....
Thanks mate, but yes i shall help you step by step hun so dont worry, There will be aggresstion from the group, but you have to go through this in order to get a pair, its a case of watching and being ready to remove the loser, But i will help you as much as possible,The water we have is obviously good enough to breed these guys, proven by mwahhh...
I have also just scored a little list from someone of some channa he can lay his hands on,so once you get the bug<you will> then i shall inform you of his email address and where he lives, which is only a 30min drive,,,

LOl I am very lucky tokyogasmark. Stupid question time is Ornate a nickname for Orntipinnis or is that one of the many snakeheads Nelly has had? ;)

Oh no Nelly! I have puffer bug I cant have snakehead bug, alex will kill me lol. Thanks for the guidance, I know you will keep me right :) thanks for the linkies, I may be readier sooner than I thought. I have to say without Nelly's help I wouldnt have been in fish keeping this long!

thanks on the pellet types, gives me something to aim for alongside meat!

p.s. what is with your avatar, I cant stop staring at it!

Mini update, I am pretty much to get landscaping this weekend, I have a ton of rock including lots of large lave rock and more slate like pieces and pebbles, 13 etra fake plants to add to the menagerie in there already and large portions of 3 types of floating aquatic plants! Cant wait to get started, might give a go and then see what you peeps think?

Thinking rocks around the edges and back with middle open swimming space?

Well set the tank up and could do with opinions. I have used every source possible, the only thing left to add is the piping outlets and floating plants that I have safe in the other tank.
