Hi All,

First time visitor to MFK and first time aquarium owner here (so go easy on the acronyms please!). I was given a complete 55g tank setup with a male Wolf Cichlid a couple months ago. Before you get all fired up, I know from reading online that a 55g tank is too small for a male Wolf Cichlid, but at the time he wasn’t that big and I couldn’t exactly get rid of the fish and keep the tank when they came together as a gift.

That being said, the fish is getting bigger and it’s time for me to find him a larger tank to call home. I live in a small 1BR apartment, so I can’t possibly fit a larger tank than the one I already have. My questions are:

1. What’s the best way to find my wolf cichlid a new home? Craigslist or the local fish store or some other means? Ideally I’d like to trade him for new live stock for my tank. He’s about 14 inches long, beautiful green and blue color, and has great “personality” in that he frequently follows me around in his tank when I’m walking around my apartment and does a little dance when its feeding time.

2. What do you recommend I get to stock the tank next? I would rather have a small # of eventually large fish than a community tank of small fish. 1 or 2 freshwater fish that are hard to kill and have awareness/personality that extend beyond the tank walls would be awesome. I’d like to keep the price under $200 total. Less important, but also nice would be something that can eat live feeder fish occasionally and something that doesn't require me to do partial water changes every week (I do a 40% change every 2 weeks right now). I’d also be happy with a freshwater eel or other animal that had these characteristics.

Thanks so much!

Post a thread in the market place on here for your region. I'm sure someone will take him. Also try calling local fish stores and asking if they will take it in as a trade or adoption make it clear that its a dovii and will require a tank in the 300 gallon range once big enough. After he's gone. Do some research as to what you want. There are many options to choice from as long as the fish doesn't grow over 10" TL then it will be fine in a 55 just note the bigger the fish the less fish you will have.

Thank you for the suggestion Doomiedee. I finally got a chance to measure him (been out of town) and I would say he's closer to 15" in length, so even though he's the only fish in the tank it's definitely time to find him a new home.

I have posted to the marketplace per your advice. I was hoping to get some advice on what might be a good species to seek in a trade, since I am a relative novice fish-keeper. I did try calling several local fish stores, but all of them said they don't have a tank large enough to keep such a monster. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks
