Doing water changes
I am going to europe from May 24th thru June 12th. Which is a total of 19 days. Now I usually do about a 75% water change weekly on all my tanks but since I am going to be gone for so long I am worried about the water changes that I am going to miss. I can have a friend stop by to feed twice a week which wouldnt be a problem. But I was thinking of doing 2-3 large water changes a week before i go and 2 large water changes during the week when i get back. What do you guys think? And what have you done in the past when you went on vacation for awhile?

First off...those are some pretty big weekly changes. Why so much? You will be gone for 2 1/2 weeks! Just have the friend do 10-20 percent when they come over. If they dont know how...I'm sure there is a bay area member that would be glad to meet your friend over at your pad to help them do it.

I like to do big water changes since the water quality is better from past experiances of doing smaller ones with ammonia spikes and other problems. I doubt any members would do that since i have 3 tanks running and about to add a 4th. Currently I have a 20, a 55, a 100, and im about to add a 75 when the background is done. If anyone would be willing to do this for me Id would compensate them.

PM me...depends on what town in the bay you live

Doing several water changes before leaving will not solve anything...do a good, normal one, feed sparingly during the last days you're there and go and enjoy your hollydays...Europe is marvellous.

In my 33 years of experience in fish keeping I have yet to know of one instance where a friend ( mind, not a fellow hobbyst which is a wholly different matter ) in charge yielded better results than no friend at all....
Leave the fish be...keep them safe from friends...

if the system is well balanced, 19 days will do no harm....

( of course if you have a hobby guy who is able to pass by, it is better ) but God forbid friends!!!

i agree w/ miguel, even though my friends have seen me feed my fish and clean tanks tons of times. i know i'd be just as well off leaving them at walmart to be taken care of- somethings gonna go wrong. what do you have in your tanks that require that kinda water change?

Your fish should be fine with no water change for that amount of time unless your tanks are highly overstocked.

I would say rite now i am overstocked but I wont be when i leave for europe. I have 3 tanks 100 gallon with 2 full grown oscars and huge full grown convict and the rest are 3-4 inch fish 2 green terrors a Jack Dempsey and 6 Managuense. A 55 split with 2 breeding pairs of Managuense about 4-5 inches each. And a 20 with some convict fry that are growing.

I also looked up this place that would charge $100 an hour to come and do water changes and clean up everything. So I am kind of considering that.

And after you guys mentioned me having a friend do it I just thought to myself what could happen and thats out of the question now.

100 Bucks? what a i rip. id do it for 99 dollors and 100 cents!

Has anyone ever used aquarium maintenance people when they have gone on vacation? To do water changes and feeding Good experiances or Bad experiances anything? Im just worried i am going to come home to dead fish which would be horrible!
