i am going out of town on monday and was wondering what you guys do w/ your gar and other fish. i have a friend comming over every day to check on them and feed them. anything else i shoud do?

sounds like you got it covered. i would go over some scenarios with your friend and quiz him just in case something happens.

examples being would he know what to do if the heater went out? does he even know how to check the temperature and where it should be? does he know how to do a water change if its necessary? etc.

good luck!

I personally do not care for others messing with my fish..Gars really need no care if you are gone for a week or two..not sure what your other fish are or what their needs are but for the gar just leave them alone and just do not trust others to properly care for them, it is best they just do not feed.

I don't trust anyone to care for my fish either. I just feed a little heavier for the week previous, then do a water change before I leave. I've gone away and left my fish (including some sensitive stingrays) for 2 weeks without a problem. Gars are hardy fish and will be fine.

he is just going to be checking on them and doing some light feeding. nobody else does my water changes. he will also have my number if anything comes up.

i agree with richard and eric on this one. unless i have other fishes to worry about, i don't mess with the gars if i'm going to be gone for several days to a week (although they can go for much much longer without any food and be just fine). i have a very short list of fish people that i trust with my fishes (richard knows that :)) but other than that, if you go out of town (and other than checking on the tanks like your friend is doing) i wouldn't mess with feeding them or having others do anything to the tanks--

These, so to speak, are "low maintenance" when it comes to going away - That's the beauty of keeping certain monsters such as gars and... LUNGFISHES! They're best left to their own accord.
Do a water change, and do clean your filter, and that's that. But, most of all - tell your friend not to open the lid - it could end up on the floor...

I have to chime and reinforce the "leave 'em alone" advice that has been said. I thought I did a great job showing my buddy to care for my fish while I was gone. I came home to a filthy tank full of rotting food and lost a few hundred dollars worth of Frontosa. I went to my LFS and the owner said I could have left them alone, and a lot of fish spend long periods without food while being shipped from around the globe with no problem.

Yes, leave everything alone..I take 3weeks hollyday every summer..leave everything as is. Have never seen a situation, in 33 years of fish keeping, where the fish were better upon my arrival, when somebody was taking care of them...just have your friend looking to see whether the pumps are working, filters working, no tank or hose leaking and that is it...

ok i agree w/ the gar being fine for a week, but i also have a silver arow that is a baby. would he need fed?
