Has anyone tried that new frozen product from Hikari "BIO-PURE" Frozen Silversides??

They look like tiny whole fish..

My male JAG who used to eat between 4-6 Massivore pellets per-feeding TWICE a day has slowed down a lot.

He seems to have gotten bored with them, and is starting to turn into a fuzzy bastard, waiting and holding out for his Tetra Freeze-Dried Jumbo-Krill.

He now eats 2 Massivore pellets, then usually spits the 3rd one out.

Since this started I have only been feeding once a day in the morning, and skipping late night snacks.

For many months he was eating the pellets like a monster, I'm talking atleast 6 pellets per feeding 2X a day.

I want to try those Frozen Hikari Silversides today and see what he thinks about them, if he likes them I guess he will stop eating Massivore pellets completly.

I want to grow a monster JAG, and with my frequent water changes, excellent filteration (3 Eheim Pro3e 2078 Canisters) (3 AquaClear 70 Powereheads) this was happening at first.

But now he seems to be in like maintenance-mode as far as feeding.

Here is the link for the product, http://www.hikariusa.com/products/bio-pure/bio-pure_silversides.html

I am going to the LFS in 1-hour.

I think he'll probably love them. But they're mostly water with minimal protein, so I would mix those in with his usual pellet feedings.

I haven't seen this in stores yet (at least in my area) but I was surprised how low the protein content is.

If nothing else, he will devour the silversides. Don't stop with the pellets though.

Jags are cool fish but mine have always stalled out around 10-12" or so.

it should be good thing to mix into the diet, but definitely don't stop with the pellets, perhaps a change in pellets would help if it's getting too picky

Thanks for the info guys, all the LFS stores did not have it, but one good store heard of it, and will be stocking soon.

I bought another brand, one that said it had less water content then most, which I am now finding out the be the issue with these feeders.

This brand said it was only 78% water but the 2-other brands were in the 90's.

I thawed two of them in some warm water..

Before offering it, I did try a Massiovore pellet, after he had not eaten for more then 24hrs.

He ate one, the 2nd pellet he gummed up, spit all over the place, (thank god I have bare bottom) I would have killed him :)

OK so I offer the first silverside thawed, its floats to the bottom and he is afraid of it..

Finally after waiting for almost 10-mins, I took the 2nd silverside (this time crushing the head to expose the brain-matter (learned this technique raising ball pythons and it worked well for fussy baby snakes of course on newborn pinkie rats/mice not fish :)

Anyway I guess he liked the smell of it and after a few mins of looking at it he ate it..

Minutes later he ate the first one that I dropped that had been floating around the tank.

After that, I did a small barebottom vac to clean the pellet mess and the fish particles that remained from the silversides.

I know next time I try a pellet he is going to screw me completly. I sure hope not, I went through this with a WC adult female a few years ago, in the end the fish was stuck on superworms and NOTHING else.

The superworms were a pain in the ass because the shells were always clogged in the filters because most of them came out in the fish poop.

Cool all ways good to give him some veriety

But thaw them out in Cold water not warm when you thaw frozen foods in warm or hot water is breaks down the protain strains in them and causes them to loss nutrition

we give them silversides as a treat... and the pellets as a staple and massivore also a treat...and also krill as a treat.. the more varied diet the better..

Ya know you must have been reading my mind, I was thinking of doing that. Gonna try that tonight under the moon-leds.

I'm going to stuff one silverside with a Massivore pellet.

I wanna keep him on a good feeding schedule to get some girth and size on him. I do daily water changes of 40%-50% there is like never any poop or food on the bare-bottom tank, I am kinda wacky with water quality :)

I might me the only guy on earth with 2 tanks, one that is 150-g and one that is 22-g and I buy Prime in giant 2L jugs :)
