imo sand is very messy and too much work, my piranhas are messy eaters too so i got 1cm of black gravel, but w/ a giant tank w/ giant fish id go bare bottom to keep it cleaner or u can even lay tiles on the bottom, and a huge piece of DW would be awesome! Pics when done plz!

I seriously thought about doing a tile bottom tank. I did the back glass I a more or less tile style with various thin flagstone w ledges. I have sand and driftwood in that tank so far can't complain about the sand but I do run a sump system. The river rock tiles really peaked my interest but it's not cheap.

Sand would be cool, dont think its really that much work, just stir up the top and place the vacuum about a 1/2 inch on top... I would go with deep sand so he can play in it!

Yea same here, there are some rad tile bb tanks on mfk! My lhs has granite tiles and i thought it would look modern but too expensive imo. Just a thin layer of gravel for me works, very easy and quick vac, substrate can really be a huge nitrate pit ESPECIALLY if you overfeed!!! When i vac mine i can only imagine how much worse other peoples are! I straight drain it out my window so its no big deal at all!

I don't have a giant tank nor do I have giant fish but I have a black sand bottom in my tak and love it. I have no problems with it floating or being disturbed really. The tanks is home to two baby pbass growing, a rainbow shark and a pleco. The shark actually has dug himself an interesting cave out of the sand under lipped rock.

Only time my sand floated was in setting up and filling the tank. Used a net and got rid of it and it all settled great. When filling it use the wall as a way to stop the water from going crazy to help minimize the floating sand
