Check out stock symbol GLD. It's an exchange traded fund that invests in Physical Gold and tracks the price movement of Gold. It's traded like stocks and therefore very liquid. They warehouse their gold holdings in a very safe place.
Buying and keeping physical gold is fine too if you are willing and able to store it in a safe place.
Buying Gold jewelry is another option if you are capable of ascertaining the quality of the gold in the jewelry you are buying.

You don't have to worry about the value of gold falling through the floor like certain currancies have done in the past.
I pick up gold every time I see it laying around on the ground that someone has lost.
When ever I see it at garage sales, etc etc....
Sold a small pile of rings chains ear-rings and other gold stuff back in December 09. Paid my rent, bought filters and food for the fish, and finished the money off on a 1/5 of Black Velvet.

Gold backed off it's all time high, and currently trading for around $ 1,100 an ounce. I think It's still around it's all time high, in terms of Euros.
