My wife called me today and said that the gold fish at her work had been sucking up gravel and spitting it out, then a big peice of gravel got stuck in its mouth and kept choking on it. I was told to get a pair of tweezers and take the gravel out. Luckily by the time i arrived at her work, one of her employees had already done this. Is this the right way to remove the gravel? And is this a common thing or do they have a strange fish? I'm not a big fan of gold fish so i have no knowlege on this subject. Any help would be great.:grinno:

my oscar did something similar!!

but he eventually got it out

It's pretty common with goldfish, especially the fancy varieties (some of which can't even breed naturally)

I also had my oscar inhale a remarkably large pebble while chasing down a small feeder, to his credit he managed to sort out the feeder from the rock and spat the right one out :)

This particular one was a large fancy goldfish. So i guess there changing out the gravel and putting in flat marble stones. I guess the problem is solved.:)

i had a gold fish, well feeder that didn't get eaten, that used to do that. i just let him work it out on his own.

I would sugest sand instead. as large flat marbles will trap waste big time. and depending on the size of fish and the deffinition of large marbles it might still be a problem.

several reasons to go for sand, it looks nicer (IMO) easier to clean (once you perfect the tecnique anyway, cichlid forum had a good video explaining it, however their no longer hosting it at the mo) doesnt trap water like other subtrates, if the fish swallow it no problems, and the fish seem to enjoy it more.

allthough you need to stir it through regularly, just to avoid anaerobic bacteria(but you need to do the same with gravel)

you just need sand or to sort out anybig peices of gravel out. another thing is when fish do that it can sometimes be a sign they are hungry.

Really? I hadnt thought of that, but i'll look into it. Again, its not my goldfish, so ill have to ask my wife what the feeding schedule is for their fish. How many times a day should they feed a fancy 5 inch gold fish,2-3 times a day?
