How do goldfish act when they are ready to spawn. How do you tell male from female. i have two about 10 inches a piece and the one I believe to be male is chasing the supposed female nibbling around the anal fin.

WHen conditioned right, males will for white pimples around the gill region...Fermales will be plumper than usual, singnifying she is full of ripened eggs....Increasing the temp to 68=74degrees helps but you don't need to....Have a lot of bushy plants in the breeder tank...Goldfish are egg scatters and will devour any eggs in front of its nose...The male wll chase the female around the tank, stimulating her to fart out eggs...When this happens, the male squirts his sperm....After an hour or two, remove the parents to another tank....The fry tank should be at 72-78 degrees....Feed the fry baby brine....
tnx, in that case I think they already spawned and ate the eggs......all the signs you mentioned were there, although I didn't really look hard enough to see if the male had the pimples, but the female was plump, he did chase her quite a bit, and it looked like he was trying to stimulate her. I will know next time.
