Have seen several similar progression threads, thought I would create a journal type thing for the 6-7” gold jag I got from cota a couple weeks ago.

I’m kind of curious how he’s going to turn out - this is my first jag so no sure how to project forward on him. What do you guys think, is he going to spot up? And he’s male right? Lol. Haven’t checked the vents, I’m trying to give him space to settle in right now, had to switch up the tank once he started living up to species reputation. He’s going into a solo 125 in coming weeks.

I’m not quite sure about gold Jags but that might be a female. Either way Jags are in my top three centrals, such a cool fish. Usually after their murder phase they seem to cool off and just run the tank. I like having one to start my central tank. Usually they take down anything that seems like a contender and leave the rest. So if your timing is right you may be able to house him/her with others, so long as they are not stupid enough to challenge for #1. Good luck either way buddy.

Appreciate the input. He and male JD spend most of their days flexing at each other through the divider, I’m just going to move Jag into a solo setup.

What makes you think female out of curiosity? Anyone else have thoughts? I asked COTA to give me a male and he said “no problem, easy to sex at this size” so I haven’t really considered possibility of female...

Bump... for help sexing this fish? I honestly can’t find anything definitive to go on via searching forum or google. Seems like it’s very interpretive from fish to fish?

Fins seem pointed. Is that enough to go on? Obviously he’s a gold morph so i don’t know how to factor that in. Lol

The best way is to look at it's vent. If you post a good hi-def pic of the vent somebody could tell you definitely what sex it is.

Sorry for the delay buddy, just was looking at the lack of spots below the lateral line, mainly the face. Definitely not a fool proof method, especially with a jag with unfamiliar colors to what I’m used to.
