How many gold Rams could I stock in a 40b going with a semi planted biotope type tank setup ?

I suggest 1male and 3 female ratio. If you don't want them to spawn 3 or 4 males. Even though Rams are small they are still territorial.
Thought with fans it was best to have an even m/f ratio so that they each get their own territory. Not sure but it’s what I’ve heard before
Personally had 2 male and 3 female German Rams and only 2 paired up and spawned yrs ago.
I never heard of that ratio but try it.

And if you end up with a pair, they will relegate the other 2, to the opposite end.
And if there is a successful spawn, you may need to remove the other 2 to a separate tank.
Just because they are small, and cute does not mean they are any less aggressive than dovii, if the territory is not sufficient.
In nature they may live in a foot or less depth of water.
But they often claim a territory of 4 ft square.
Once a pair forms they will terrorize any other rams in a tank that size. I had four (2 males, 2 females) in a 40 breeder and then a 55, and in both instances the spawning pair absolutely hounded the other two. It was chasing all day.
