I bought two gold saums on august 24, and using my limited knowledge of them tried to pick out a male and female. Well i was successful, and three days ago the female laid eggs on the under side of a log, funny thing is is that this is the dominate fish of the tanks home! He is a male fire mouth that is over twice her size! Anyways she would stay under the log and guard the eggs while the male would swim around the tank and every couple of minutes going under the log with her and stay in there a while. Before they started mating they seem to hate each other and swam away from one another when they saw each other. We'll two days after she laid the eggs the female was out and about and totally abondoned the eggs and i am now guessing they were maybe not fertalized, since maybe the male is not mature enough yet, or the other fish got to them, which i doubt. Anyways, now the male and the female are constantly fighting, locking lips and smacking each other with there caudal fins. Well today i woke up to feed them and they both came out of a cave and seemed to be liking each other again, then after i started feeding them they were back to fighting. Is this normal behavior for them? I was thinking maybe they were just testing each other?
