I've only had one other gold saum male prior and he was only around 4" and he never developed the black line. My current gold saum male is right around the 6.5" mark and has a black line going through his black spot that is pretty much the length of his body.

Is this normal? Does it go away? Is it genetic related?

Here's my fish so you can see the black line I'm talking about.

Below is a pic of another GT (not my fish) without the black line - this is how I'd like my fish to look.

That second pic is my old male who is unfortunately no longer with us anymore. He died unexpectedly overnight around the beginning of the year. Im happy to see his pics are still circulating and hes still appreciated.

What are the tankmates of your GT? Does is go away at all now and then or does it stay that way all the time?

He was a beautiful fish, that's for sure.

The black line stays there all the time. He is the big gentle boss of the tank - nobody messes with him and he doesn't really mess with anyone else. The only fish he chases is the #2 boss of the tank which is the Sal. Prior to me adding this guy to the tank the Sal was trying to spawn with the female GT and she was starting to get nicks in her fins. Upon adding the big guy the Sal has left her alone.

His current tank mates - which will be changing this Saturday are the following...

Gold Saum - Male (this is the big guy)
Gold Saum - Female, he's not really interested in her, she had been spawning with another male GT in another tank until he passed. Her prior male did not have this black line at all, was only about 4" but was beautiful showing awesome colors and starting to form a kok. I might move her as well on Saturday...but she is a really beautiful female GT, dark green scales with just an awesome temperament.
Silver Saum - Little guy a little less then 2"
3 Sevs - 2 of which are going into another tank this Saturday leaving a 2" gold Sev in the tank.
1 Sal - Male, he's going on Saturday as well
1 Nic - Juvie, starting to show coloration of a female, she'll be staying
1 HRP - Unknown sex, about 3" s/he doesn't bother anyone and spends most of the time digging tunnels under my rock work.
1 Regani - Juvie, unsure of sex, he will be staying
1 ZZ Eel - Staying in this tank
7 YoYo Loaches - Staying in this tank
10 Giant Danios - this are moving out on Saturday as well

So on Sunday, this will be the ending stock list on the tank except I will probably add a school of tetra later on.

1 x Gold Saum (Him)
1 x Silver Saum
1 x Gold Sev
1 x Nic
1 x V. Regani
1 x HRP
1 x ZZ Eel
7 x YoYo Loaches

It should go away with age.
I've kept juvies & they always had the lateral line, but my biggest guy never had it. I got him around 6.5"-7", he lived to 12" TL.
I never kept the Juvies long enough(weren't females) so I can't confirm this 100%.

Anyone able to confirm this?

I was just looking at old pics that were taken about 2 months prior to when the second pic above was taken and he had somewhat of a black line every now and then. Heres some pics. If it doesnt fade every now and then, I dont believe it will change.
