Sorry, not the best pics, I will keep taking some to see if I can catch them right. These guys are around 4.5 inches, possibly slightly smaller. Just bought them as I've been after a nice male as a showpiece for a while. However they would only sell these as a pair so decided to dedicate a tank to them. Does anyone know what species they are? I know it's tough, especially with these photos.

Well, it's both a Green Terror and a Gold Saum. The common name is Green Terror and Gold Saum is a newer name to try clean up a messy classification. However, the latin is Andinoacara sp. 'Gold Saum'.

Green Terror is the common name to three species and thats where it gets confusing.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'm more confused now. I thought Gold Saums were a slightly different species? They got bigger than 'normal' GT's? Other than size though I have no idea how to tell them apart. They are considered 'false Green Terrors' is it the false variety I have? That's what I was hoping. Thanks again for the replays

Three fish come under the common name green terror:

Andinoacara sp. 'Gold Saum' (The fish you have), sometimes referred to as the false green terror - wrongly. These fish are larger and generally more passive than its fellow species. A small number of saums have white or silver edgings to their dorsal and caudal fins - reffered to as white/silver saums. Still fall under the same species.

Andinoacara stalsbergi, The 'True' Green Terror. These are smaller than the Saums, more aggressive and have an inverted scale pattern. These are harder to obtain than saums, so you would know if you had one. They have white bands on their fins - but much thinner than saums.

Andinoacara rivulatus, a very uncommon species to the aquarium trade. Similar to the saum in scale pattern, but has the thin bands on the fins, is similar to the 'true' in size and temprement.

All three fish are referred to as Green Terrors. This is why it is always to refer to them using their latin names instead of common names.

great example

I stand corrected last time I read up on the topic rivulatus was the gold saum or at least the article I read which was from very knowledgable source said as much. sorry for the bad info I should have checked not just recalled from memory.

Nice pick up bro! The pair looks great, it's actually a good thing that you got the couple since they look their best when breeding :) It's also a big plus that the male isn't harassing the female.
