how can you tell which gold saum is a male or female? I just got two of them and wanted to know how to telll them apart if infact they are male and female.
Try doing a search because this topic has been covered many times over. Sexing Saums is hard to do when the fish is under 4''.
SOMETIMES the dorsal and anal fin coloration give it away but not always.
I have a theory of the blue irredesence patterns being heavier on the lower jaws of females then on males like on Jack Dempsey's....but that would only show on more mature specimens when the patterns are in full bloom. Thats just a thought I've had and shouldn't even be considered to sex a GT.
What I've been noticing is that the jaw and the lower portion of the gill plate are a solid blueish-green iridescence on alot of females and speckled on males. Of course the females patterns range in size and shape...I've seen a few females with very low grade markings, and didn't hold true to my observations. But I've seen enough females to make me question if this could be a possibility.
Of course, fishes markings of both sexes are what makes them individual...some are heavy and some are light. One way owners are always trying to sex GT's are by studying the dorsal...A long, flowing fin with bright, crisp coloring is a "dead" sign of a male. But that isn't always the case because that 'male' with the flowing fins just all of a sudden laid eggs and now you have a uniquely colored female.
If it did turn out that on a general scale, females have a large patch of iridescent bluing on the lower jaw while males were only speckled....That's all it would be is on a general scale.
A prime example of a male having the female patch (lol) that I'm talking about is JCA's awesome Gold Saum. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55682 http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55682&page=6
You take a look at Big Train's female GT its a good example of what I'm talking about.http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55682&page=4
The two photo's that I'm attaching are a breeding pair that belong to a member on this forum but for the life of me I can't remember who.
Just something to put out there and think about. I'm probably wrong.
