Today I picked a little gold severum. Probably only 2 inches long if that. What should I feed it? I normally feed hikari cichlid gold and staple, and NLS cichlidae pellets. He is trying to eat them (which is a good sign ) but he spits them out. He's only been in for today so hopefully he will settle in the tank and start eating. I tried feeding my Oscars and the sev some romaine for the first time but none took it.

Make sure the pellets are small enough for him to eat. If they're too large, they may have to get waterlogged and soften up before he can eat them easily.

I've never had young severums show interest in lettuce or greens. They tend to develop a taste for that when they get older. I feed Romaine to my adult severums and they love it. I also notice when I put zucchini in the tank for my plecos, the severums will tear it apart and peck at it.

I suggest if your using Hikari Cichlid Gold like I do to start out with the mini pellets until it gets big enough for the larger size. I started my Severum's on the minis and they had no problem with them. They are growing out nicely and attack the pellets as soon as I put them in the tank.
