Hello All! I just picked up a Gold Severum from the LFS, and thought I would put together a thread (similar to my Jack Dempseys' thread) to track its growth.

The Severum is about an 1 1/4" long. It will be fed Hikari Gold mini-pellets, bloodworms, and brine shrimp with spirulina.

It is being housed in a 55 gallon with a Jack Dempsey that is currently around 4" long. I am hoping there will not be any agression issues, but it will depend on the Dempsey. So far (three days) there has been no damage dealt. With that being said the Jack definately eats first and most, and the Severum grabs what he can, although both wind up with full bellies.

He/she is a little drab at this point. It is a light gold color with a deep orange anal fin. There is no red "worming" on the face at this point. The Severum also has verticle bands, which I assume is a juvenile pattern that will fade. Which brings me to my first question. Do Severums typically color up upon maturity or does the intensity of their colors remain the same. I assume that they will change in pattern but I guess what I am asking is will the amount of red on the face/fins increase as he/she ages.

Here are some pictures! Enjoy and feel free to post pictures of your own Gold Sevs/ Green Sevs/ Rotkeils/ Red Shoulders! Thanks in advance!

it should color up ,the one in my avatar looked similar as a juvi. he has no more barring as an adult

Would you care to post pics of yours as a Juvie if you have them? Or just pics of it now. It looks like a male in your Avatar... is that the case. Thanks for sharing

Out of the 4 golds I have 3 were bred from gold parents and were very clean gold from day one, matter of fact they almost looked like young pink convicts. The gold one that had a green parent looked like yours. This one has since colored up but still has a kinda dirty look about him with very little red at all. It certainly depends on the individual, but in my experience golds bred with greens won't look as "clean" as those bred with two gold parents. But, exceptions make the rule. Hope yours turn out like you want it to.

Second post. I forgot, I like your food choices, but make sure to add some veggies in for the sev. I usually just use veggie flakes from time to time. The BW and brine shrimp and pellets are a good way to get good growth but sevs do a litte better with some veggie.

Thanks for the advice. I will add some veggie matter to the diet.

dont assume the JD will own the tank and be the toughest, keep an eye on the sev for aggression. i had a gold sev that kicked the crap out of a large and nasty male con twice his size and a P. Loisellei again twice its size, the sev was put in last as a last minute addtion. he tried to take on the GT but the GT was 4x his size. he was one mean fish especially since i got him as a "peaceful" addition. definitely more balls than brains.
