I was netting fish in a small pond near my house, and game across a fish that looks and behaves exactly like a regular gambusia affinis, but has ~25 small gold speckles throughout its body. The speckles are completely round, and shine in the sunlight. Is this just a morph of G. affinis, or is it a different species of gambusia? I can try to get some pics, as i have them in a tank right now - they are thriving, but i do not know what they are.

Thanks!

Uh oh. Got fireproof pants? This is gonna be a rough ride without them. Just so you know, you have many vulnerable/protected Gambusia in Texas. ID is critical before you take home a protected fish.

does anyone know what they could be? Or is there a resource that has pictures of all the gambusia species? Google return no relevant results :(

not that i know of, im sure some pics would help an i.d.

Totally off topic but......
Hahahaha we totally use to use this on sneaker forums when someone was about to get flamed for posting fake sneakers etc etc.

Btw how did you not know abt what fish are in the pond on your property? Not trying to flame or anything j/w. I'm guessing the pond came with the land? If so, thats pretty cool.

I gotta ask....What is a sneaker forum? Do you mean sneakers like shoes? If so, are participants of the forum in the industry?

As far as my fireproof pants comment....you hit the nail right on the head. Sometimes people want/take rare fish and make all kinds of claims like "it came from a private pond on my friends property" and in some cases they are indeed telling the truth. If you live in Texas, you sure know about all the rare gambusia and probably know about their status. It's in very poor taste/unethical (if not illegal) to take fish home without ID regardless of the situation. I want to believe the poster has the best of intentions here but I'm awfully suspicious that folks just gotta have that rare fish.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that I'm one of the grumpy guys around here :irked:

Sorry if I clobbered you too hard badisbadis101.

I understand your concern, but i honestly did take them from a private pond, on my property. My family purchased the property in March of this year, and there was a pond on it. I was simply curious as to what fish were in it, so i went netting. When i came up with a couple cool fish, i brought them back to the house and put them into a tank to observe them. The pond is drying up rather quickly this year, and i beleive it may finally dry up completely this year. If so, we are planning on dredging it, and the restocking it with the fish we collected their originally. ;)

That sounds like a good plan if that happens. I wanna see pics of this guy! Wait, are these those huge mollies that get to be 5" long? I think my lfs has a few!
