Hello, I was wondering if the gold wolf ( hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus) is too agressive to keep with other fish? What I would be planning was things like a big fire eel, a bichir, and an african knifefish, maybe with an unagressive cichlid in there. Can hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus be kept with tankmates?

sometimes but most of the time it can as long as the tank mates are as large or larger with those tank mates you've got a shot get a larger bichir like ornate or weeksii or a faster one like delhezi an african brown knife proubly wouldn't do we'll there not very tuff i don't think one would work with a wolf fish of any kind the others you could try but it all depends on how aggressive the wolf is but if all its tankmates are larger it may just keep to its self you have a much better chance of keeping a gold or rainbow wolf fish with other fish then a common wolf but still its only a chance

i have three gold wolffish in with about 5 bichirs, a peacock eel and two hujetas. i've yet to see any aggression from the wolves towards any of my other fish but they often snap at each other. my biggest is about 8" the next is around 6.5" and the smallest is about 5.5". The biggest sometimes chase the two smaller ones, the mid sized one chases the smaller one occassionally and the small chase no one (besides feeders). I don't know if I'll keep the wolves together because i don't want any of them to die but sometimes I'll walk in and they will all be swimming in a big circle together at the top like everything is fine. But to answer your question, they seem to get along fine with the bichirs, eel and gars, its just each other that they sometimes have a problem with.

i have a rainbow wolf as well and the bichirs that are in the tank with him lie all over him all the time. the rainbow and my lazy retropinnis bichir share the same "resting" spot. their is a knife in there with him too and he doesn't bother any of them. everyone in there is in between 6-8".

ironmunki: Is there much of a difference between the activity level of your gold and rainbow wolves? A local store has both in and I plan on getting one. I keep on hearing the rainbow is not active, but most of the post on this site seem to say people have very active rainbows.

i've only owned two rainbows and in my experience they are no where near as active as the golds. not even close. rainbows are more active than the common wolf but thats not saying much. one of my rainbows would swim from one side of the tank to the other and then maybe swim back before chillin' on the bottom for another hour or two. and he was the active one. the golds hardly ever stop swimming. if activity is what you want definitely go for the gold.

it seems that most gold are active whereas for reds(rainbows) it can vary very much between individuals.
some can be very active and never stop swimming, and some can be lazy even during feeding time.
for activity i'd go with golds.
but if you want something prettier,i'd go with reds.
