If so, it was a brown banded bamboo shark and will grow up to four feet.

To my knowledge, there is no species of bamboo shark, at least available in the aquarium trade, that only grows to one foot.

First off - no Bamboo shark grows to only about 12".

The smallest Bamboos still reach - at least 2' in length(the Zebra/Indonesian Bamboo). The largest ones (the White-spotted & Brown-banded) reach up to about 3-3.5ft in length.

Also should be noted that LFS - are generally one of the worst sources of information when talking about sharks. Often times quoting bad information from online dealers.

Still it's doubtful the owner was messin' with you mind. Most likely they are just trying to make a sell, or actually may not know the truth themselves. source.

Owning a bamboo shark requires the largest of tanks, and sadly most die in aquaria.

Personally - I wouldn't quite go that far.

I've heard of people that have private saltwater ponds/tanks that are well over 2,000gallons. And I've personally talked with people that have kept & successful breed Hemiscyllids (Bamboos/Eppies) in ponds of about only about 1,000 gallons.

So it's absolutely possible to keep a pair of bamboo sharks in a home aquaria, for their entire lives.

As for why - they die in aquaria. It's actually due to 2 major factors.

1.) people impulse buy the sharks or shark eggs without throughly researching information on how to keep sharks - Which IMO Should Never Be done.
2.) LFS that lie to customers - either in order to to make a sell, or ignorance.
