I've been doing a lot of research for potential fish for my future 10x4x4 tank and stumbled across the dorado, really like this fish especially the Franciscans species as they don't get as big as the other more rare dorado. But how well do they do with tank mates? Mainly it dats, bichirs, black aro, rays and geophagus?

Frankies get the largest.

The world record franciscanus was caught in 2008 on the Rio Sambura in Brazil and was a shocking 85 pounds, two ounces. <- straight from the sticky.

As far as tank mates I've had pretty decent luck cohabbing them with a lot of the typical monsters we keep..... There's a vid of mine in the media lounge. The dead thread "3/4K gallon who's in charge"

I'll be making a vid this weekend when I attempt to reintroduce my Frankie to the 750 which is currently ran by a Brassy Dorado. Seeing them swim side by side makes it much easier to see the differences between the 2 species.

Aren't brassys typically meaner? And I read that frankies get around the 2' mark in aquariums and the brassy gets larger, around 3'. Also frankies are easier to find here. I've seen and read that dorados are like most fish, some nasty some peaceful, it's all luck of the draw but I figured going with frankies I'd have the best chance of a community set up, albeit a large predator comm setup.

I don't think Brassys have been available long enough to know much about them. I've only ever seen them twice. Very little to no first hand experience available regarding raising them in captivity......

I've had several Dorado over the years and can definitely tell you that you are spot on - some are nasty, some are peaceful. I had 2 out of the same batch that were complete opposites.

From what iv read it seems that if given enough space and kept well fed then with the right tank mates they can work, problem is they aren't an everyday fish, there still considered quite rare, especially brassys so there's not a lot of first hand experience of any dorado species in private aquariums but its worth a try, it may go well or it'll be a disaster.

I've never kept 1 before but I personally don't think it would do well with bichirs mainly cuz of the amount of current they need. When I had a ****load of current running in my tank for my armatus and goonch, the bichirs were extremely stressed out from it and completely stopped eating.

What if I kept the high current near the top of the tank? That's where the dorado swim normally, and it'll be in nearly 4' of water so it could be very slow current at the bottom for the bichirs and high at the top for the dorado.

If you can pull it off, I'd say go for it but to my understanding, they're extremely active and will swim at all levels of the tank but as long as you have strong current somewhere in the tank, you should be ok then.

My 22" Dorado was kept in a small(ish) tank by the previous owner with a Hoplias Aimara and much larger P-bass and he had to sell it due to the dorado bullying everything. Thats how aggressive dorados can be.
