About a week ago, while fishing the shingle creek river system here in central FL, I came across an awkward looking gar. I have been fishing these river systems and channels for years now in search of my long over due trophy bass. Not to mention, I have been catching live bait for years now as well and never seen such a strange looking gar. At first, I thought it was a gold fish due to the fact that even in dark waters, this darn thing stood out so much. I preceeded to pitch a live shiner at it just to peak my curiousity. While reeling the bait in, the gar took hold and ran right at the boat. Once he saw me he quickly let go as most gar due when startled and began to swim away. When I got back to the boat ramp I was telling one of the guides who I supply for about the encounter. He then told me the bad news that what I had on the end of my line was worth over 4 grand in the exotic fish market, and potentially worth much more then that depending on size, weight, etc. etc. Even more so, that just to have seen one is rare. I see gar everyday! Catch gar everyday! the one day I actually wanna catch one, not only cant I, but come to find out, its worth more then my boat!! Go figure......
