Ok, he's not doing very well again. Looks like he swallowed the gravel because he's swimming on his side, and his abdomen is a bit disdended

Here is a video of the poor creature.

I really think he's impacted. I havent' seen him poop since the last post I made. And I've been watching him like a hawk.

I'm expecting a call from the vet any minute now too to see if he DOES deal in fish, and how much it would cost to get my poor Sev fixed up, if it's even possible.

If I'm gonna be getting another big Cichlid (As I said, we inherited this guy from one of my husband's co-workers...) we'd A: Get a MUCH Bigger tank for it, B: Make sure the substrate is NOT Gravel (Might go with the plant friendly substrate if you know what I mean) And have it nice and planted for him/her to hide in. That's the setup we have for it now, which is the setup he came in originally when we inherited him. We were trying to get a bigger tank for him, Used Naniamo, here.. the local BBS my husband uses through work.

I really feel bad now. I tried...I really did try...

I kinda feel like I failed the big guy ya know?

Dont beat yourself up. Live and learn.
We've all been there. It sucks for sure. Poor guy. Looks grim.

Good luck with the fishy vet.

Add Epsom's salt...He looks cramped in the small tank, but more importantly, bloated...I have had a couple fish survive bloat, but it is not for sure. Try to keep the tank dark (cover it if you can) and do not feed....He can live for months with no food. Starve him with just the salts for a couple weeks. Only peek to make sure he is alive...do not disturb him right now....Good luck.

Oh I know the poor guy is cramped :( Been lookin for a 75-90G in my area *that we can afford...new from Petco is just too much* to re-house him in. We got him in that tank originally (inherited him from one of the hubby's co-workers who got posted cross country)

We'll pick up some epsom salts tomorrow (if he makes it thru the night) and I'll cover the tank too.

by the way if he doesn't make it, I'm going to disect him in the name of science. Hard to do to a pet...but it's better than not really knowing you know? I suspect it's impacted gravel....

Once I get done school and whatnot, I will be investing in a decent size tank and possibly get another Sev...or an Oscar...or a Midas...who knows lol.

FOR SCIENCE YEA!!!! ..best of luck with your fish, hope he gets better.

ok I FINALLY got ahold of an aquatic vet . He said there isn't much to be done except keep the GI Tract moving and hope it passes. If it doesn't pass, then chalk it up to "It happens" He said that big cichlids are notorious for eating gravel...he always reccomends a sand or a larger gravel substrate (as in pond rocks) for the big guys.

*sigh* So, guess I'm gonna keep trying to feed him. Do water changes as much as I can..and if he pulls through then he pulls through..if not..then FOR SCIENCE! (when my daughter is at school of course)

It isn't bloat though, it's a belly full of gravel that's messing with his swim bladder. I saw some in his mouth a few days ago, he swallowed it, now it's impacting in there.

The Vet said to feed him to keep the GI moving so he can poop it out hopefully.

Sounds like you have/had it all figured out. Good luck.
