I am in the process of building my 500 gallon tank 6x4x3 and am seriously considering a schoal of piranhas for it. At first i thought I would just get 25 or so red bellies and call it a day as I've had a schoal of 12 8" RBP in the past that I enjoyed a lot, but the more I look around I really like the gold spilo's and think a large schoal of say 15-20 would be amazing. Would that be possible in a 500 gallon? Would a lot of dither fish help with the fin nipping early on? Any thoughts or suggestions would be great!

I would say it's possible at a tank that size, people have done mac cohab in 125g so I see no reason it won't work in a 500g. but again there's not guarantee that it'll work 100%. dither would definitely help with fin nipping and with a tank that large its good to have some small fish to fill out the tank a little more. from what I have heard/read that they are more aggressive to each other and cannibalistic at small size, so maybe grow them out in different tanks until they are maybe 4" then add them into the 500g.
have you thought about doing piraya in a tank that size?
what kind of tank is it? plywood or acrylic? be sure to post up some pix

It's a plywood build which I have a build thread going here I did think about piraya but cost factor for getting enough of them to fill the tank in would probably put my wife over the edge :) Unless I can find some at a decent price. The gold's I find to be one of the best looking so thought a large schoal of them would be pretty impressive.

Ive seen spilo and mac sholes on youtube befor and its realy cool seeing them all together! Im not sure if you could mix reds in, maybe but be sure your sure about it befor you start. There not a cheep fish to be buying that many. but if you start them off really little it would increase the chances of it working. But good luck and take pics haha!

i have a mac school of 3 right now. been together in my 125 for 2 years, and now they were downgraded to my 110. been trying to sell them for a while now, but no luck. but i thought about mixing some reds with my macs as well. but a nice shoal in a 500 gallon tank would be very impressive.

You can of course expect some casualties. There is always a risk of total disaster and whether you think its ethical to take that risk is a personal choice. I would guess that you have a good chance at success with only the occasional loss in a tank that size.

Depends on what size you get them at you may have to grow them out in smaller tanks first, will be difficult to feed if you dump them into a tank that size when they are just couple inches or so. Do a lot of research on them first before you just jump into it, Macs aren't too expensive but aren't too cheap either.

Sadly I haven't had tanks in about 6 months since I sold my 180 gallon reef tank off to make room for this one so I don't have any tanks atm :( W/e I decide to get will have no choice but to go in the big tank, I honestly figured the sheer amount of room for small piranha's would help lesson their aggresion towards each other and I never thought feeding would be an issue with piranhas. It's either going to be these guys or a amazon stingray/arawana tank, though I was kinda leaning towards the majestic piranha. I'll see what kind of info I can dig up on the gold spilo's, seems like all the info is for rhoms, must be pretty popular!
