Hey guys, I am looking at a wholesaler's stocklist and I see regular trimacs (labeled C. trimaculatus) and "golden trimaculatus". I have never heard of a golden. Does anyone know what that refers to? I'm thinking I will just get a regular one. It's a $2 difference.

i feel like i've heard of these before, but i would expect them to be significantly more expensive than a regular trimac? (a lot of stores sell flowerhorns or trimac x flowerhorns as trimacs so watch out for that)

No such thing as a "Golden Trimac" it's a marketing gimmik, there is only Amphilophus Trimaculatus, it may have a lot of yellow depending on the type location but it's still a regular Trimac. If it's a hybrid it's not a Trimac.

I remember a thread about this a long time ago. The general consensus was that there was only one fish referred to as Trimaculatum. But there was one or two people that were positive that there was a Golden, Green, and Pyro Trimacs and that they had actually had them at one point in time. I still believe that the only difference is the collection points. If you order from a reputable vendor, you should end up with a very nice Trimac regardless. Just be careful of fancy names. Sometimes those fancy names are the ordinary fish that you want in the first place or a hybrid to give the fish a certain look.

I found the thread that I was referring to but I don't know how to post a link to it. Just search for "Pyro or Golden" Trimacs and you'll find it.

It's Segrest farms. It is not really reputable when it comes to identifying fish. They have been selling Polypterus senegalus as palmas for years. But they do have lots of cool fish. It's less than $10 for regular or golden. They will probably be 1". My boss is gonna pick it up for me and he doesn't know New World cichlids well, so I can't count on a proper ID.

Maybe I should just buy from Don Conkel. He's a short drive away and I can trust his fish.

If you have a choice between purchasing from a source that can't readily identify their stock and from a source that is known for their knowledge of cichlids; I would go with the second option. I haven't personally purchased anything from either source. So I'm not bashing anyone. I'm just going off of your statement.

I've seen gold flowerhorns in china town. they turn into some very good looking fish, matter fact they have some of the best looking flowerhorns ive seen. but they are a hybrid, flowerhorns are made with trimacs. but you have to be into that and id rather have a nice pure bred trimac anyday. plus some of the high end flowerhorns are priced insane. so thats one fish in a tank. can u imagine a dovii or red devil or any other big aggressive cichlid desiding to destroy your $400 flowerhorn that u thought would make a nice colorfull addition to your tank. lol

origin: lake malawi
care: easy
environment: some cover
minimum tank size: 30gallon
max fish size: 8"

I wouldn't buy anything from them. If anything I think we should all email them and let them know how dumb they are.
