i need some good info on breedin my gold fish. he is a calico ryunkin i'd like to know what size tank i need to buy, what filter, how to sex my goldfish and any thing else i should know. i curently have a 29 gallon set up with a small oscar in it that will be moved soon and i was wondering if it would be big enough for a breeding tank

and can you interbreed any kind of goldfish or should i just buy another calico ryunkin

Orandas
Lionheads
Bubble-Eye
Pom-Pom
Ryukin
Black Moor
These are some of the fancies I have had in the past...Ever seen a show tank with 5 giant Lionheads swimmimg in it, it's amazing...Or how about a 200g display tank filled with adult sized Orandas...It's the first tank that always greets me on my way down to the fishroom in the heart of Chinatown San Francisco...It's scenes like that remind where I once was as a beginner, afraid of venturing into the "heated" water aspect of fishkeeeping...

Breeding goldfish is simple as 1,2,3 or just 1....Yes "1"...

The 1,2,3
Find a long 20g plus tank...Place a lot of bush plants....Or, you can try spawning mops...Beef up temp to 70-72...Condition breeding hopefulls with mosquito larvae and other goodies...Male goldfish(and fancies) usually show white pimples on their gill slits when in breeding behaviour(don't freak out, it's not ich)...Females become plump with ripened eggs, their belly region take on a chiken egg-roundness...The male will chase the female around the tank and through the breeding media...I have had situations where a male would chase a female between the filter tubes and keep ramming her, while she was stuck...Be careful here...Sometimes males have been known to keep going and going, to a point where the female would die...When enough eggs have been laid, quickly seperate the egg eating parents from the eggs and hatch....

The "1" step
AkA "stripping, or milking"
Take a fish from both sexes and apply gentle outwards pressure from the belly to the anus...Takes some practice, but once achieved the skies the limit...

Have you breed them yet ? Are you breeding them for feeder or just for fun ? If it's for feeder use convicts or JD's

BigSteve:
why do you choose cichlids? Ive found juvenile convicts are great for a bit of sport for my Oscars, never really considered them as a pure feeder fish though.
do you find the convicts grow faster, or have more fry than the goldies?

is lachie g' and benny h' the same person or is it just coincidence they have similar names and end all their posts the same? anyway according to what you wrote my goldfish must breed alot. lol. But I have yet to seperate them from the eggs. the male constantly chases the much larger female around the tank sometimes for hours. Then they are fine for a couple of days and after i do another waterchange they do it again. Can water changes trigger them to breed?
