Anyone ever fished for the common comet goldfish? Ive heard of a guy catching a 3 lb comet in minnesota or michigan. I went to a neighbors pond with huge 3' and larger koi and I was trying to get fishing privelages. Its an older woman with a 1/2 acre koi, goldfish and native pond. She used to let a guy fish there but he got sent to jail for other reasons. Its been untouched for about 4 years now other than her feeding the koi pellets. If I get rights to fish there I will be bringing any comets back to my pond while leaving her prized koi untouched. Has anyone ever fished for any goldfish? Really curious how they can fight as I know they are decently strong fish

they fight like a carp but, not as strong as a catfish in my opinion

Yes, I have caught them up to 15". Good fighters at first but tire fast.

I went to a lfs and bought 50 comets and I put about 20 in my fish tanks for food and possibly to grow bigger if they arent eaten. Going in the pond as soon as they get even remotely large. Gonna put 10 in my pond and see if I can fish tommorow in this storm if I can ill use some as bait and the rest go in the pond. Wish me luck that they grow big. Im really hoping to get some big goldfish but not hoping on it. Worst case scenario I lose 10 bucks but ill have a good time fishing with the rest.

Released 30 or so today into my pond ill hope for the best that they grow big. I had albinos, kio like color mixes, and brown goldfish in there.

good luck and keep us posted. I know your biggest obstacle will be predators especially birds. Those goldfish stand out like sore thumbs, easy pickings

Ya ill keep everyone updated. I dumped them in a small pool like structure surrounded by plants. Its connected to the pond its just a layer of plants and theres a pool like thing in there I put them in. I went back today to go fishing and I saw 3 of them in there. Theres a big heron in the pond that grabs alot of fish. So I doubt theyll make it too long. If they do however stay on the bottom they have a better chance

When I do a population suvery on the lakes that holds goldfish populations I found very few large goldfish that is over 10" but 5-6" goldfish are very dirty common. But Johnnylightning is right, if there are predators are present, all of your 50 goldfish will be gone very quickly. It takes a fluke for a goldfish that escaped from the predation to grew into a large one.
