Hi, I just got in some goldfish. I'm not sure what exactly they are, I've phoned EVERYWHERE about this. These fish have got the head like your lionhead but the single tail of a commet. They have a long wavy tail but its definately a single tail. I work in a pet shop specialising in fish but I have never seen something like this before. I know that it is hard/impossible to keep lionheads together because of the commets aggressivness. Is it possible that they could have been kept together before and interbread? These fish are between 20 and 25 cm and are spawning as we speak.

Yep, I use to breed ryukin and lionheads along with much more. Just have never seen this before and I need to try get a value on them. Just spoke to my countries leading breeder and he claims its rare to find them. He is not sure on what they are mixed with. He's only seen 3 cases but all babies

they are all carasius auratus though right? so all the goldfish breeds can interbreed with eachother. it could just be a particular outcome of 2 varieties breeding that is quite uncommon to get. either way if your countries leading breeder says they are rare I would trust that judgement.

PICS :D?

Here's a picture, not the best. The one on the left is the singletail lionhead with a normal commet next to it. Its head looks as if it is still forming, you normally see that size head on a 6-8 month old lionhead

Crosses between single tail goldfish and fancy goldfish are quite common. Similar to koi breeding with comets. You don't see the offspring very ofter due to culling by the breeders.
