OK, the only reason I am questioning whether or not I can do this is b/c I do not have a heater on my tropical community tank and the tank the goldfish is in now is the same temp as the tropical tank (about 78) since this is my room temp living in florida. My question is other than temperature, do I have any reason to believe this would be a bad idea? All tank mates would be peaceful and I have plenty of plants in there. I thought it might be nicer for him to live in the 30 gallon than the 10 gallon too. Just looking for some feedback before I go ahead and try it. Thanks

Well technically your not supposed to due the the requirement of different temps but I have had tanks like that for a long time and have one running as we speak which has been up for about 4 years with no problems.

What type of gold do you have? A fancy? Common or comet? Do you have any loaches in your tank?

Another question: How many fish are already in the tank and what size?

Golds should have approximately 20 gallons for 1 goldfish. Without a doubt he'd be better off in a larger tank, but not if there's several other fish.

yah that is a good point what size is your tank as golds do make a lot of waste....but i'm glad to see someone interested in golds as most people trash them even though they are a pretty sweet fish

well the filtration is better in the planted tank for sure. i have no loaches and although the tank is pretty close to full, I would rather keep him in there since the live plants greatly help the tank with nitrate levels. a 30 % WC is done weekly and it is mostly tetras in the 30 gallon

Swede, could you please take a shot of the fancy goldfish that you are dealing with? A 30g is about the minimum I would advise for fancy goldfish but it also depends which variant we are talking about because several can reach 10-12 inches max. A 30g can house two fancy types. If these were crown pearlscales, bubble eyes, celestials, eggfish or shortbodied orandas, a 30g will suit to just fine.

Since goldfish are very sociable creatures, it would be more prudent to provide them their company preferably their own. One alone tends to not do anything much but sulk looking rather depressed due to lack of interaction with members of its own species. I have one that has remained isolated for his own sake after the tumor surgery and I sometimes find myself sympathetic since he looks depressed without anyone to interact with but he appreciates how I spend time to feed him and even check his condition. He's not the type who would freak out from the presence of their owners but rather hold still when petted.

Fancy goldies can tolerate a temperature bracket of 72-78 degrees but make sure not to exceed it anymore because at that point, they tend to gasp to the surface. Goldfish are heavy oxygen consumers so you have to avoid that issue.

What tetras do you have? Some tetras may work just fine but you have to avoid fin nippers in general. The only tankmates I ever considered with goldfish are platies, guppies, bristlenose plecos and dojo loaches aside from the obvious apple snails.

I have 2 platies, some colombian tetras, 2 dwarf gouramis, a couple small plecos, an asian bumble cat (maybe its not asian but its the smaller of the bumblebee) and a brown knife. I know it sounds like a lot, but the parameters stay safe. My concern now would be oxygen levels in the tank, however, i don't have CO2 on the tank and with all the plants plus an airstone I think I could provide enough oxygen.
