I have a little pearl scale goldfish that has a bad case of ich. I saw him last night and he was fine and this morning was covered. I bought him and the temp at the store was 76 so I started with 76 and lowered it one degree a day until it was at 72.

I removed him from the 15 gallon and placed him in an isolation tank that is 1.5 gallons. He is small, so he has plenty of room.

I added aquarium salt (1.003 sg) to his little tank (and the tank he came from) and put in the proper amount of aquarisol. His temp is 72 at the moment. It is a very small tank, and I don't have and cant find a heater that will allow me to raise his temp above 76. I didn't think he would like a high temperature of 80 or 82 degrees either.

If it is absolutely necessary to have the temp higher, I can put him in a 5 gallon tank with a regular heater. I didn't do this to begin with as it would mean he would have to be in a different room.

Any other ideas on what can help this guy? I plan on changing 1/3 of his water 2 times a day as well.

Hi Grace,

Your pearlscale is a fancy goldfish. Almost all fancy goldfish prefer their temperature by at least 74-76 degrees Fahrenheit more than the pond types such as comets, shubunkins and common goldfish do. My fancy goldfish get 76 degrees Fahrenheit in their tank. Please stop moving the poor guy around your tanks. This is a very stressful activity. If there were other fish in the 15g, then those fish should also be treated for ich as ich tends to spread easily around the tanks. I'd simply keep the temperature consistently at 76 degrees Fahrenheit and treat with salt only, nothing else. Keep treatment for 14 days.
