I'm just curious how many people have successfully kept goldfish with tropical fish? Whether it was a feeder that escaped and grew up, or a fancy, could they keep up with other fish like cichlids food wise? I'm assuming a goldfish isn't any messier than an oscar or a parrot cichlid. I'm just curious.
Pics appreciated!

It is highly not recommended to feed goldfish to cichlids as they can carry diseases.

I have kept goldfish with other tropical fish such as Bala sharks, plecos and cories.

I either have really good filters or all the goldfish I've had have good manners. My tank(s) are rarely messy. When I siphon the gravel it comes up clear all the time.

I've only kept goldfish with plecos.

This summer I'm thinking of trying some cichlid fry in my pond with some comets. It's at least an idea I've been giving some thought.

I've kept them with barbs, sharks, pleco, large peaceful tetras, .. goldfish have great personalities.. would like one now but wouldn't suit my cichlid tank

I overwinterd koi and goldfish "and cool water cichlids" in kiddy pools in my basement, because in Milwaukee my ponds froze solid 3 ft below the ground level.
In theory, goldfish are healthier at cooler temps originating in China, but so do paradise gouramis, many barbs, weather loaches, high fin sharks etc etc.
And the cichlids of southern South America also come from cooler waters.
Many of the "braziliensus complex, Gymnogeophagus, Australoheros and some Pike cichlids, even the piranha like tetras of Uruguay, are cool water species. So depending on how geographically correct, you want your tank to be.

I personally don't mix fish from different continents in a display tank, it always looks a bit off, but in non-display I can be just as hypocritical as the next guy.

I must admit I'm a recent convert to mixing South / Central American and African cichlids ... if done properly .. and with right species .. I've had less conspecific aggression probs .. and the more active Africans distract attention ... not for you if a natural scape scene is your thing I guess

I haven't but they generally like the cooler temps with higher oxygen levels that cool water brings. so It's probably doable with sub-tropical fish :)

Thanks for the replies, this has always been a fascinating topic to me. I've always LOVED goldfish, they were my first fish of course as a kid. And I haven't kept them since. I often think about adding one to my tank to see how it does.
