in the future id really love to get one. they are my one of my favorite fish and i love the coloration but i have some questions.

1: how big do they get?
2: when do they develop their golden color?
3: tankmates?
4: tank size?
5: growth rate?

thanks for any info or direction to info(links).

I agree, really awesome fish, but also fish for experts...
1. In the wild they'll grow to over a meter (40"), in tanks you can expect 2 ft.
2. Probably at about a foot.
3. Can't answer this one, since I haven't any experience with these fish..
4. Huge. Seriously.. They grow very big, are constant swimmers and are also quite agressive.. Personally, I wouldn't keep these bad boys in anything less than a 10x4!
5. I also can't answer this one, but even if your planning a 300-450gal tank in the near future, I'm afraid it won't be enough.
My dream pond is a 15-18' diameter round pond with some huge stingrays and a few dorados. That would be absolute insane :D :)

I've seen some 14"era that still were not golden. I was just wandering I it was the same issue like payaras where they might get 4' in the wild but only 1'-2' in captivity.

not really, they still grow massive! Maybe a 300 gal tank will do. ^^^
